Hiring someone outside the company to help doesn't take anything away from your leadership skills it just means that sometimes fresh eyes on a business can be a very profitable thing. They will listen to what the CEO are telling them is wrong and asses the areas that need it. Define: the consultant will use this stage to define what the strategy will be to help a company move past their past problems. They will create a baseline and then identify the opportunities that need to be fixed. In this stage not all problems can be repaired at once, so the consultant will make a list of what needs priority of another. They will sit down with the CEO and let them know why they think things should be done in a certain order and it may not be the CEOs vision of how to solve problems and that is why the fresh pair of eyes is important.
Design: The consultant will create a business plan that is designed to build up the solutions to the problems at hand. They will figure out what needs to fixed first and then design a plan of attack. The best part of hiring an external consultant is that their way most likely has never been tried to repair your problems so it is the thinking outside the box depending on who you hire that develop a great design plan to help keep your company on track.
Implement: Once a company has been assessed, the problems defined and a plan of attack has been designed the only thing left is to implement the plan. The consultant will go over their findings with the CEO and show them what the benefits are of their plan or what could happen if nothing is done. Whether the CEO chooses the plan that is another story but they are there by the request of the CEO or owner to help identify problems within the company and know how to fix them.
Make sure that when you hire an external consultant that you ask for experience, qualifications and possibly any company recommendations or letters or recommendations from other company who have previously used and liked their service. You want a consultant that can get you results not a lot of excuses.
