Learning To Live In Africa
Are you planning to work or live in Africa? It is a very beautiful place to live and it has so many great things to see and do they also have very large metropolitans areas. Living in another country has some advantages but there are so many things that you need to learn when living in another country. When you live in another country, you are not considered to be a citizen, you are considered to be an expatriate.
Expatriates have almost the same rights as citizens that live in Africa, they must follow the same laws and they are not considered to be above any law or receive any special treatment. Before moving to Africa, it is a good idea to read up on the continent itself as well as the country that you are planning on living. You can find out a lot about the country from the official government website of Africa as well as the embassy of Africa.
There are plenty of resources available to expatriates; one great resource is from the Association of American Residents Overseas. The AARO is a volunteer style organization that represents the overseas interest of more than 6.32 million American Citizens living overseas. They offer medical insurance to US Citizens that live outside the United States. This is just one thing that you will need when you live in another country.
When you live somewhere like Africa, there are customs and different ways of life that you have to get used to. If there are different languages that are spoken where you plan on living, it is a good idea to start to learn the basics so you can at least get by. Leaving your home country for another is a risky thing to do, you don't have the benefits of being a citizen and if you run into trouble rather than calling the police, who you should do anyway, you should have the number of your homeland's embassy.
You should also start to check out the laws and regulations of the areas where you are moving. Check the health care in Africa before you move. Check the crime rate and see if there are expatriate warnings, these are like travel warning when you go on vacation, they help determine if the area you wish to move to is safe for tourists or expatriates. If you need a working Visa, it is a god idea to apply for that as soon as possible. You want to make sure that the Visa and your passport are up to date.
You don't want to be in another country if your papers are not up to date. You also want to make sure that all of your vaccinations are current and find out from the African Embassy what else is required to become an expatriate in their country. Most of all, you are a visitor in their country, even if you live there, respect the country, the customs and the citizens. Afterall, all you want is a nice peaceful experience.
